Hacktivate Mesa needs data savvy mentors

December 10, 2018 at 1:42 pm

Hacktivate Mesa is a two-day experience for 90 local high school students to discover, study, analyze and present data about a challenge facing our community. Team presentations will be judged, and the winners will receive exciting prizes.

The City of Mesa and Mesa Public Schools invite data savvy professionals to mentor the small groups of students throughout the event by providing technical expertise, answering questions and giving guidance.

Mentors are needed with the following background and skills:

o Data analysis using Excel
o Data visualization and presentation best practices
o Critical thinking, uncovering connections and patterns
o Familiarity with csv, kml and map datasets

"This is a great opportunity for those interested in data, education, or just want to help students get more involved with their community," Evan Allred, Mesa Data Governance Administrator said. "Hacktivate Mesa helps promote data science, STEM, critical thinking, problem solving, presentation skills, community pride, and so much more."

Hacktivate Mesa is January 18-19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mesa Convention Center.

Interested mentors can register at mesaaz.gov/hacktivate. A briefing session for all mentors will be held prior to Hacktivate Mesa.
