City of Mesa Seeking Applicants for Advisory Boards and Committees

Mesa residents are invited and encouraged to participate in the local government process by serving on the Citys volunteer advisory boards and committees. The City of Mesa seeks the knowledge, expertise and experience of its residents to advise, inform and make recommendations to City leadership and City Council on a variety of policies and services.

Recruitment for advisory boards and committees is ongoing; all appointments of applicants to the boards are recommended by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. Current openings are listed below. Applications for all advisory boards and committees, including those not listed below, are accepted, and reviewed on a rolling basis.

The Board of Adjustment conducts public hearings to hear and decide upon requests for variances, special use permits, and interpretations of the City of Mesa Ordinance and Sign Code.

Community Representatives (2)

The Building Board of Appeals hears appeals to determinations made by the Building Safety Director and/or the Fire Marshal, decides on reasonable interpretations of the Building Regulations and Chapter 2 of the Fire Regulations, determines the suitability of alternate materials and alternate methods of construction, and recommends changes to the various building and fire codes.

The Design Review Board reviews buildings of four or more stories in height; any multiple residential projects that exceed the RM-2 density range; commercial and industrial projects that have frontage on an arterial street, or that are part of an existing or planned development that has frontage on an arterial street; and any commercial and industrial projects which have, or will have, greater than twenty thousand (20,000) square feet of gross floor area. The Board also Reviews parking garages, and City of Mesa municipal projects.

The Economic Development Advisory Board acts as the advisory board to the City Council on matters pertaining to economic development, including goal setting, strategic planning, marketing and business recruitment, retention, and expansion.

The Historic Preservation Board makes recommendations to the Downtown Development Committee, the Planning & Zoning Board, the Board of Adjustments, the Zoning Administrator and City Council. The HPB also makes recommendations to the City Council regarding public policy development for the preservation of historic resources throughout the City.

The Housing & Community Development Advisory Board advises the City Council about housing, community development, social services priorities, funding, and planning across the community.

The Human Relations Advisory Board advises the City Council about racial, religious, ethnic, cultural, disability, or other human relations issues affecting Mesa City government and the delivery of City services.

The Judicial Advisory Board recommends to the City Council the best qualified persons to become City magistrates and evaluates the performance of appointed magistrates, and advises the City Council about retaining them.

The Library Advisory Board acts as the advisory board to the Mesa City Council on matters pertaining to Library services.

The Merit System Board meets on an as-needed basis and makes recommendations to the City Manager concerning Personnel Rules.

The Museum and Cultural Advisory Board advises the City Council on policies related to arts and cultural facilities and services and on policies related to public art. The MCAB also makes recommendations on fees and charges, attends events and advocates on behalf of arts and culture.
