A sign unveiling was held today to honor the return of Spring Training. Sixth Place that runs along the practice fields for the Oakland A's was renamed to Athletics Way.
"This has been in the works for some time now," Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, Marc Heirshberg said. "With the return of the Oakland A's to Mesa last year, we wanted to celebrate their homecoming and honor their partnership and dedication to Mesa."
The Oakland Athletics began spring training in Mesa in 1977 and returned back to a newly renovated Hohokam Stadium last year.
"We are honored the City of Mesa has decide to rename Sixth Place to Athletics Way," said Michael Crowley, President of the Oakland Athletics. "We have a long rich history in this city and feel this is a wonderful way to kick off our second spring back at home in Mesa."
The A's will kick off this year's spring training season on March 3 against the Los AngelesAngels at 1:05 p.m. at Hohokam Stadium. For tickets visit: http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com or visit the Box Office at 1235 N. Center St.
