Mesa residents recently donated more than 20,000 pounds of food during a series of weekday Feeding Mesa Canned Food Drives created as part of the Mesa CARES Initiative to meet community needs resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Two weekend drive-through events are scheduled in August with a goal of collecting an additional 10,000 pounds of donated canned foods and other non-perishable items.

The newest You CAN Make a Difference food drives will take place Saturday, Aug. 8 at Red Mountain Center, 7550 E. Adobe and Saturday, Aug. 22 at Dobson Ranch Golf Course, 2155 S. Dobson Road. Both events will be held from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

"Mesa residents really stepped up and donated generously during the recent weekly food drives to help those hit hard economically by the pandemic," Mayor John Giles said. "I know they will help again as food insecurity continues for so many people in our community."

The food drives are coordinated by Feeding Mesa (Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Department and Mesa Community Services Department), which has partnered with United Food Bank and Midwest Food Bank for distribution of the donated food. Funding for Feeding Mesa comes from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
