The City of Mesa has been selected as a park improvement grant recipient from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) with support from Niagara Cares, the philanthropic arm of Niagara Bottling LLC.

The City is receiving $130,000 to support the renovation of Palo Verde Park, 3135 S. Dobson Road, including new play equipment, shade structures, playground lighting and additional accessibility elements including ramps and accessible playground surfacing. The playspace is scheduled to be completed by Spring 2021.

Opportunities to play and recreate outdoors in community spaces like Palo Verde Park are vital to connecting children and families to the natural environment, encourage physical activity and ensure the health and sustainability of our community. In the City of Mesa, this new playspace will invite children of all ages to be active and spend time outdoors.

"We are grateful to NRPA and Niagara Cares for the funding to provide the new playground equipment at Palo Verde Park that provides more opportunities for children and their families to enjoy the outdoors," Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Director Marc Heirshberg said.

The remaining $350,000 required for the project will be funded from the voter approved 2018 Parks Bond Program. A virtual public meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 22 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., where citizens can provide input on the design elements and ask specific questions on this improvement project. Advance registration is required for the public meeting at www.mesaaz.gov/engineering.
