Artists Wanted - Mesa Announces Plans to Add Murals that Celebrate the Asian District's Cultures, Commerce and Community

Calling all muralists! The City of Mesa seeks experienced artists with the ability to capture the vibrancy of a community and produce large murals on building walls or panels. The artworks will be installed in late spring and late fall at various commercial locations within the Asian District, Mesa, AZ - a one-mile stretch on Dobson Road in West Mesa, roughly between Broadway Road and Main Street.

The Asian District Community Mural Project aims to celebrate the diversity of cultures, community, and commerce that makes up Mesa's unique hub comprised of more than 70 restaurants, grocery stores, retail shops and other business services. This mural project is expected to enhance the ambiance of the district and visually represent the vibrancy of the Asian community.

"The mural project is a wonderful way to celebrate and capture the vitality of Mesa's thriving Asian District," said Mesa Mayor John Giles. "I'm eager to see what will be proposed to reflect the importance of this area in our city."

Interested artists are asked to electronically submit art samples, a biography, references, and other related documents by Feb. 25, 2022. Submissions will be accepted via Google Drive or Dropbox. These submissions will be used to create an artist roster that will be used to identify and match artists for specific mural projects in the Asian District.

"This project was born out of ideas from the Asian District Steering Committee as a way to celebrate the culture and community and add even more reasons for people to visit and enjoy the area," said District 3 Councilmember Francisco Heredia. "We're looking forward to the outcome."

The mural project is part of a larger branding and signage campaign to create awareness of businesses in the area. Street signage along Dobson has been updated with the Asian District logo, and several businesses proudly display on their storefronts logoed window clings designed to represent the district's culture, commerce, and community. In addition to the murals, the City of Mesa will be installing banners on street poles, traffic signal box wraps and large branded banners on buildings this spring to help shoppers discover the area's offerings.
