Household Hazardous Materials Facility Helps Dispose of Dangerous Waste

As we celebrate Mother Earth and create awareness about reducing, reusing and recycling, the City of Mesa reminds its residents to read labels and understand the dangers of certain household products. Many items used or found in our homes do not belong in the trash or recycling barrels and should not be poured down the drain, our yards or the street. Instead, they should be reused, recycled or disposed of properly to prevent pollution.

Mesa's Household Hazardous Materials (HHM) facility, 2412 N. Center St., is open to all City of Mesa residents to help dispose of dangerous waste. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. However, HHM also offers opportunities for residents to reuse and recycle:

Swap Shop - Hazardous materials can be reused safely to help reduce our environmental footprint. They include paint, automotive fluids, garden products and household cleaners, available at no additional cost to our residents.

Paint Reuse Program - Incoming latex paint is sorted, filtered and repackaged in five-gallon buckets. It is then available to Mesa residents at no cost for exterior use. The Paint Reuse Program is an excellent resource for those who can't afford paint or looking to maintain the upkeep of their neighborhood.

The HHM website also educates the public about items that are and are not accepted, and how to properly dispose of hazardous materials to keep department drivers and neighborhoods safe.
