Mesa Police to Enforce Fireworks Laws over the 4th of July Holiday

June 21, 2022 at 10:21 am

The Mesa Police Department will be conducting an education and enforcement project on local firework laws over the 4th of July holiday. In December 2010 the State of Arizona reversed its previous ban on the consumer sale and use of certain types of fireworks. When the State legalized these fireworks the City of Mesa did as well. But not all fireworks are legal, and you cannot discharge fireworks just anywhere. The use, discharge, or ignition of Arizona Permissible Consumer Fireworks is limited on private property, with the property owner's permission. Use, discharge, or ignition is prohibited in all public parks, public retention basins, and public facilities.

The sale and use of permissible fireworks is limited to specific dates throughout the year. Those dates are listed below:

SALE
April 25 - May 6
May 20 - July 6
Dec. 10 - Jan. 3

USE
May 4 - May 6
June 24 - July 6
Dec. 24 - Jan. 3

Remember not all fireworks are legal! The use, discharge, or ignition of prohibited consumer fireworks can result in criminal charges. A good rule of thumb is that any type of firework that is shot into the air is prohibited. Firework laws for the City of Mesa can be found in Mesa City Code, Chapter 21-Fireworks: https://library.municode.com/az/mesa/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=COOR_TIT6PORE_CH21FI
