As the East Valley Community begins Lunar New Year celebrations, the City of Mesa has unveiled new monument signage for the Asian District Mesa, in celebration of the district's cultural vibrancy and economic significance. The signage is located at the southwest corner of Dobson Road and Main Street, in front of Mekong Plaza.
"The Asian District is not just a vital part of Mesa's economy; it's a celebration of the cultural diversity that makes our city unique," said Mayor Mark Freeman. "This new monument signage is a symbol of the City of Mesa's commitment to supporting this vibrant community."
The monument signage serves as a beacon for Mesa's Asian District, which stretches along Dobson Road between Main Street and Broadway Road. The thriving district is home to approximately 100 businesses including authentic Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Filipino and many other Asian restaurants; international grocery stores; bubble tea shops and bakeries. The district is also home to cultural festivals, performances and other community events that celebrate the rich heritage of Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
"The Asian District is a space where cultures intersect and thrive," said Councilmember Francisco Heredia "It's a point of pride for Mesa, and today's unveiling underscores the importance of fostering inclusivity and growth."
The origins of Mesa's Asian District date back several decades, as Asian-American families and entrepreneurs established businesses and cultural institutions in the area. Today, the popular commercial and cultural corridor draws visitors from across Arizona and beyond.
"This monument signage is a milestone in our efforts to promote the Asian District as a premier destination for culture, community, and commerce," said Mesa Economic Development Director Jaye ODonnell. "It's an exciting moment for Mesa and for all who operate businesses, work, live, shop, and play here."
The design of the signage incorporates the tangram, an ancient Chinese geometric puzzle consisting of seven pieces. The Asian District logo features a square comprised of the tangram pieces, symbolizing the coming together of different Asian cultures into a unified yet diverse community.
The City of Mesa is committed to fostering the continued growth of the Asian District through infrastructure investments, business support programs and community partnerships. With this new monument signage, the district is poised for greater economic prosperity and cultural exchange.
