The City of Mesa is joining the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Fix a Leak Week (March 17-23) to raise awareness and encourage residents to take action against sneaky leaks in and around the home that can drive up water bills and waste water.
This annual event, sponsored by the EPAs WaterSense program, highlights common household leaks from toilet flappers, dripping faucets and showerheads to irrigation systems and worn-out valves. A single home can waste up to 10,000 gallons of water each year due to undetected leaks enough to fill a backyard swimming pool. WaterSense Fix a Leak Week also encourages businesses to inspect kitchens, bathrooms and landscaping for potential leaks.
"Identifying and repairing leaks, especially silent ones that go unnoticed, is one of the simplest ways to save water and money," said Laura Hyneman, deputy director of the Environmental & Sustainability Department. "For instance, a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank can reveal a leak in a matter of minutes. If the color seeps into the bowl without flushing, its time for a new flapper."
For those Mesa residents who are ready to chase down leaks, the City has a Save Water Indoors and Out page with DIY videos, tips on reading your meter, water-saving activities for kids, and more.
