Writer in Residence Offers Hours and Workshops at Mesa Public Library

Published author Brooke Bessesen has been selected as the next Writer in Residence at Mesa Public Library. Based out of Red Mountain Library, she will work directly with community members from April to July, offering one-on-one consultations and hosting workshops to help both emerging and experienced writers improve their craft.

Brooke will be available for 30-minute one-on-one consultations from April through July to help writers fine-tune their work. Appointments are required and can be booked through the librarys event calendar.

Whats YOUR Story? Taking the First Step from Reader to Writer
April 17, 4 p.m. 5 p.m., Red Mountain Library, 635 N. Power Road
Each of us has a story to tell. If youve ever dreamed of writing a childrens book, a novel or a memoir, now's your chance to get started! Brooke will share insights into the writing journey, help you consider your own goals and offer strategies to find your way.

Wordplay: Solving the Writing Puzzle
May 8, 4 p.m. - 5 p.m., Red Mountain Library, 635 N. Power Road
Have some fun with words! This playful writing workshop will get creative juices flowing and eliminate any hesitation writers may have with editing their work.

Contemporary Picture Books: Character, Structure, and Voice in Under 20 Words
May 22, 4 p.m. - 5 p.m., Red Mountain Library, 635 N. Power Road
Childrens writers can understand text and illustration's interconnected yet distinct roles in picture books. In this class, we'll dissect a few picture books to examine their composition and consider how they were crafted.

Brooke Bessesen is the author of several books for children and adults. Her most recent,Vaquita: Science, Politics, and Crime in the Sea of Cortez, earned international acclaim. She also authored theArizona Highways Wildlife Guideand five childrens books, includingLook Who Lives in the Ocean. Brooke taught at ASU's Piper Writers Studio and has been honored with a Celebrate Literacy Award from the International Literacy Association, a Glyph Award, Judy Goddard Award and Grand Canyon Reader Award nomination. She has a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from University of Reading in the United Kingdom and frequently writes about nature and animals
