Construction officially started today on Fire Station 224 with a groundbreaking ceremony this morning. The new fire station, which will be located at 3441 S. 80th St. north of Elliot Road, will address the projected increase in emergency calls and reduce fire and medical response times as southeast Mesa continues to grow.
"This fire station is more than a construction project; it is a promise to our community. In 2022, Mesa voters placed their trust in us by approving the Public Safety Bond, and today we are turning that trust into reality with the groundbreaking for Fire Station 224," said Mayor Mark Freeman. "I want to thank the people of Mesa for their commitment to public safety. Without their support, this station would not be possible."
Funding for the $12.3 million facility comes from the 2022 Public Safety Bond Initiative approved by Mesa voters.
"This groundbreaking marks a major investment in the safety and resilience of southeast Mesa. As our community continues to grow, Fire Station 224 will ensure our residents have the emergency response resources they need close at hand," said Vice Mayor and District 6 Councilmember Scott Somers. "This project will help us keep pace with growth while maintaining the high level of service our residents expect and deserve."
The new fire station will contain three drive-thru apparatus bays, dorm rooms, offices, kitchen, dining room and job/task conditioning areas. It is being built to accommodate growth and changing call volumes. While the station will have the capacity to house multiple units, it will initially house Engine 224, a four-person unit.
"Every new fire station strengthens our ability to live out our mission of CARE: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence. Fire Station 224 will expand our reach and improve response times, which means better outcomes for our residents," said Fire and Medical Chief Mary Cameli. "I want to express my appreciation to the Mesa voters for giving us the tools to serve our community at the highest level."
"Public Safety is a core function of municipal government. Mesa is committed to strategic public safety infrastructure investments that futureproof our city by addressing today's needs and accounting for the projected growth of that region," added Mesa City Manager Scott Butler.
Construction of Fire Station 224 is scheduled for completion in fall 2026. It is one of several fire stations coming online over the next couple of years. Fire Station 222, 1333 N. Power Road, opened this summer. A rebuild of Fire Station 205 at 730 S. Greenfield Road is scheduled to start this fall and construction of Fire Station 223, near 32nd Street and McDowell, is scheduled to start this winter.
