Mesa Extension Road Project Begins Sept. 29

September 25, 2025 at 10:11 am

A major roadway resurfacing project begins Sept. 29 for Extension Road, which also enhances bicycle safety and connectivity. Work will begin on the south half of the project from Baseline Road to 8th Avenue on Sept. 29 through Nov. 13. The north half work will begin from 8th Avenue to University Drive on Oct. 15 through Nov. 27. The full project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The project will provide enhanced bicycle lanes along Extension Road from Baseline Road to Main Street. Originally planned for 2022, the improvements were delayed to accommodate utility upgrades. With those now complete, Mesa is moving forward as part of its long-term commitment to roadway safety.

Why Extension Road?
Community input helped guide the decision to prioritize this corridor, which will deliver several benefits:

  • Closes Gaps - Provides bike lanes where nearby arterials like Country Club and Alma School Roads currently lack them.
  • Maximizes Resources - Combines bike lane installation with already-scheduled 2025 pavement maintenance, saving time and taxpayer dollars.
  • Connects Transit - Links directly to the Valley Metro Light Rail at the north end of the corridor.
  • Improves Access - Creates safer connections to nearby schools, parks and community hubs.

The Extension Road Project supports the goals of the Mesa Safer Streets program, which aims to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on Mesa roadways by 30% by 2030 through infrastructure improvements, enforcement and education. For more information, visitmesaaz.gov/mesasaferstreets.
