Water Tower at Mesa Main Library Puts Daily Water Use in Perspective

Mesa residents can get a tangible look at everyday water use and discover practical ways to save at the Water - Use It Wisely Water Tower, on display through September at Mesa Main Library, 64 E. 1st St. With prolonged drought and ongoing challenges on the Colorado River, using water wisely remains especially important in the Desert Southwest.

The 16-foot display, constructed from 120 one-gallon jugs, puts everyday water use into perspective and connects residents with practical resources to help them make water-wise choices at home.

Some of the biggest opportunities to use water more efficiently are outdoors. Visitors can also pick up a free copy of "Landscape Watering by the Numbers: A Guide for the Arizona Desert." This practical guide takes the guesswork out of landscape watering with simple, science-based techniques that help homeowners grow healthier plants, save water and lower their water bill. Additional water conservation resources will be available.

Residents who are unable to visit the Main Library can pick up a free copy of the guide at these Mesa locations:
•Participating Nurseries: A&P Nursery (Baseline & Brown Road locations), SummerWinds Nursery, Treeland Nursery and Moon Valley Nursery
•Mesa Libraries: Dobson Ranch, Gateway, Mesa Main and Red Mountain
•City of Mesa Customer Service: 55 N. Center St.

Those who want to learn about efficient landscape watering are invited to attend a free program on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Saguaro Room at Mesa Main Library. "Take the Guesswork Out of Watering in the Desert" introduces simple techniques for determining when, how often and how much to water. Whether residents are new to desert gardening or are looking to fine-tune their watering practices, they will leave with practical tools and resources to water wisely. All attendees will be entered to win a signed book by Arizona Plant Lady Noelle Johnson or a $50 gift card to a local nursery. Registration is not required.
