Writer in Residence Office Hours and Workshops at Mesa Public Library

Aspiring writers can get help from a published author to improve their skills at Mesa Public Library. As part of the Writer in Residence Program, author Kara McDowell will use the Gateway Library, 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway, as her public workspace through December, offering one-on-one consultations and hosting workshops to help both emerging and experienced writers improve their craft.

Writer in Residence Consultation Hours
McDowell will be available for 30-minute one-on-one consultations through December to help writers fine-tune their work. Dates and times vary; appointments are required and can be booked through the library's event calendar.

Writing Romance Workshop
Saturday, Sept. 19, 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Interested in learning how to write a good romance novel? The workshop will explore the romance genre, cover the basic rules of writing romance, discuss character goals, motivation and conflicts and discuss and share resources for writers.

How to Take a Book from First to Last Draft Workshop
Thursday, Oct. 1, 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Have a story to tell but aren't sure where to begin? Learn practical tips and strategies for turning your idea into a finished book, from developing your first draft through revision, editing and polishing your manuscript. The workshop will cover the essentials of storytelling, including plot structure, character arcs, tension, stakes, pacing and more.

Preserving Joy on Your Writing Journey
Saturday, Oct. 24, 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Writing is about more than finishing a manuscript. This workshop offers a realistic discussion of the ups and downs of pursuing a writing life, along with strategies for maintaining joy and a sense of self and methods for protecting and celebrating your creativity.

McDowell is the author of romantic comedies for adults and teens, including "One Way or Another," "The Prince & The Apocalypse" series and "The Write Off." She lives in Mesa.

The Writer in Residence program is supported by the Arizona State Library, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
