The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Phase 2 of Signal Butte Park, 3355 S. Signal Butte Road, on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. The new park features 1.5 miles of new LED-lighted walking trails along with three ramadas, biking flow trails, a tot track and a BMX pump track that Pillar Design Studios, the track designer, states is the largest asphalt pump track in Arizona.
"This is a great addition to an already outstanding park and another example of how we continue to Elevate Mesa," said Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman. "Thank you to our voters for supporting these improvements and investing in the parks and amenities that make our city a great place to live, work and raise a family."
Funding for the second phase of Signal Butte Park is from the General Obligation Bond approved by Mesa voters in 2018. The approximately 43-acre park addition is designed to maintain and enhance the desert landscape as in the first phase, which opened in January 2020 and features a unique custom-made playground, four ramadas and a one-mile lighted asphalt walking path loop. A new pedestrian bridge over a wash will connect both sections of the park.
"Parks are such an important part of what makes Southeast Mesa a great place to live. As our community grows, we need more places where people can get outside, stay active and spend time together," said Vice Mayor Scott Somers. "Phase 2 of Signal Butte Park builds on the success of the original park and gives families and outdoor enthusiasts even more ways to enjoy this great community space."
After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, professional BMX riders will show off their skills on the pump track, which is the middle of the three tracks. The bike and tot tracks will officially be open to the public and the walking loops will also be open between phases one and two of Signal Butte Park. Water and snacks will be provided and Chick-Fil-A will offer free sandwiches while supplies last. Valley Rain, the project contractor, will have a raffle to give away a bike and helmet. Sierra Signs, a subcontractor on the project, is donating four bike helmets. Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities; City of Mesa Transportation Bike Safety and Pillar Design Studios will have giveaways while supplies last.
No motorized vehicles, electric bikes, electric scooters or radio-controlled (RC) cars will be allowed on the bike tracks.
