Mesa will celebrate the official opening of Fire Station 224 on Saturday, Nov. 7. The event will begin with a fire hose uncoupling ceremony at 1 p.m., followed by an open house for residents from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The new fire station, located at 3441 S. 80th St. north of Elliot Road, will help improve fire and medical response as southeast Mesa continues to grow.
"This fire station represents a promise to our community. In 2022, Mesa voters demonstrated their commitment to public safety by approving the Public Safety Bond, and today, we're delivering on that commitment with the opening of Fire Station 224," said Mayor Mark Freeman. "I want to thank the people of Mesa for investing in the safety of our community. Their support made this station possible."
Funding for the $12.3 million facility comes from the 2022 Public Safety Bond approved by Mesa voters.
"The new fire station is an important investment in the safety and resilience of southeast Mesa. As our community continues to grow, Fire Station 224 will help ensure residents have the emergency response resources they need close to home," said Vice Mayor and District 6 Councilmember Scott Somers. "This station will help us keep pace with that growth while continuing to provide the high level of service our residents expect and deserve."
The new fire station will feature three drive-thru apparatus bays, sleeping quarters, offices, a kitchen, a dining room and fitness and training areas.
The station is designed to accommodate additional emergency response units as the community grows. It will initially house Engine 224, a four-person unit.
"Every new fire station enhances our ability to fulfill our mission, 'To Serve with CARE: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence.' Fire Station 224 will expand our coverage and improve response times, leading to better outcomes for our residents," said Mesa Fire and Medical Chief Mary Cameli. "I want to express my gratitude to the Mesa voters for their support of this fire station, which will allow us to serve our community at the highest level."
Fire Station 224 is one of several fire stations coming online over the next couple of years. Reconstruction of Fire Station 205 at 730 S. Greenfield Road is scheduled for completion in spring of 2027, while construction of Fire Station 223, near 32nd Street and McDowell Road, is expected to begin this winter.
